As we enter this season of potential challenges, being well-prepared can make all the difference. Join us as we explore practical steps to protect your home, secure your belongings, and ensure your family's well-being in the face of hurricanes. Let's dive in and get ready together!

Things to do before a storm:

  • DOCUMENT BELONGINGS - Take photos and videos of every room in your house including model and serial numbers of your belongings. Insurance adjusters Will ask for a list of contents when evaluating your loss.
  • AGENT ON SPEED DIAL - Store the phone numbers and web addresses for your insurance agent and/or carrier in your phone for easy access.
  • REVIEW COVERAGES - Schedule an appointment with your agent and review your coverages. Be sure you are properly insured before a potential loss occurs.
  • PROTECT PROPERTY - Trim trees and shrubs around your home to minimize the risk of damage from flying debris. Reinforce windows and doors and secure outdoor furniture that could become airborne.
  • SECURE BACKUP POWER - Invest in a portable generator to ensure a reliable source of electricity during power outages. Familiarize yourself with the proper usage and safety guidelines for generators.
  • STOCK THE ESSENTIALS - Including food and water, first aid and medications, tools and supplies, sanitation supplies, clothing and bedding, baby needs, pet needs, and entertainment.
  • PREPARE FOR EVACUATION - Be ready to evacuate. Plan your route and know the locations of designated shelters along the way. Ensure your vehicle is in good working condition and has a full tank of gas.
  • STAY INFORMED - Stay tuned to local news and weather updates to track the progress of a hurricane. Sign up for emergency alerts to receive timely information.

Things to do after a storm:

  • FILE A CLAIM (IF NEEDED) - File a claim early! This should be done as soon as the storm has passed.
  • REMAIN PATIENT - A significant number of insureds may have been affected, and everyone wants his or her claim to be a priority.
  • DOCUMENT BELONGINGS - Separate damaged from undamaged contents. Don't throw anything away until your property has been inspected. Photos and videos are so important!
  • REVIEW COVERAGES - Review your homeowner's insurance policy again. Make sure your coverages are provided per your policy to get your property back to its pre-loss status.

Remember that preparation is key to staying safe and minimizing damage. Take the time now to review your emergency plans, gather supplies, and secure your home. Stay informed through reliable sources and heed evacuation notices if they arise. By taking proactive steps today, you'll be better equipped to weather any storm that comes your way. Together, let's prioritize safety and readiness this hurricane season. Stay safe, stay prepared!
