DON JONES
Managing Broker
Bellator Real Estate Mobile Office

I'm a read & research guy, and I have been up to my neck in reading and learning as much as possible about what we're all facing or experiencing in the world today . . . man, some days are just overwhelming! It seems that 90% of my email involves COVID-19, 100% of the doom & gloom news I watch or listen to is about it, and it seems to be one of the only topics of discussions we're having as REALTORSĀ®.

I don't know about you, but I realized I needed a break! We're only able to tolerate a certain amount of doom & gloom before we get sucked into that inescapable, black hole of hopelessness. In our time of challenge, I suggest that one of our best coping mechanisms is retaining our sense of what's good and what's funny . . . and to find the true blessing in every moment of our lives. They're everywhere! What we focus on expands.

I would like to offer some thoughts to cheer us up. Here are a few things that most all of us find funny, amusing or entertaining:

  • Puppies ( I happen to love puppies.)
  • Monkeys (Monkeys are ALWAYS funny.)
  • George Carlin (I know, he's often too descriptive.)
  • Sweet, nice-smelling babies (But, only when they're not spitting up.)
  • Epic fails (Laughter is good.)
  • People doing stupid things on video when they think they're alone.

I could go on but I'm sure you just wish I would stop, so I will. My point is this: In spite of the difficult circumstances surrounding us right now, there remain so many good and wonderful things all around us that have always been there.

As for me, I'm going to continue to take every precaution and exercise diligence in remaining safe. However, I'm going to also stop listening to so much media coverage and start paying more attention to the awesome things around me: neighbors checking on neighbors, people doing the right thing, community-minded things to prevent the spread of this frightening disease, etc. There is an abundance of love and caring demonstrated every day, and it's all around us. I'm going to pay more attention to that. And, to my stupid dog who chases his tail. (WHY does he do that?!)

We can't deny that our real estate business will be impacted for an unknown period of time. When the market rebounds (as it always does), there will be fewer agents, as some will not weather the storm. The agents who remain will be those who still have a solid database of friends, family, and former customers & clients, and the successful agents will be those who simply remained in touch with their "database of friends" to make sure they were safe and secure. I know we're all reading this same advice from all over the real estate world, and it's true. A simple call to ask, "How ya doin?" goes a very long way to let others know you care. Keep it brief. Don't make a big deal out of it. If for no other reason, just do it because you know it's the right thing to do.

In the meantime, aren't monkeys ALWAYS funny?
