You know that little shop that just has something cute for everyone, regardless of the occasion. Every so often you come across a place like that -- that always has that perfect little something. It's the type of place Jubilee Gift Shop in Daphne aims to be. And if Jubilee's years of success are any indication, it's doing a fine job of it.
Jubilee's owner, Donna Misra, has been running the store since it first opened in 1989 inside the Radisson Admiral Semmes Hotel, seeing it through its transition to a new location after in Daphne in 2010 after 21 years at the Admiral. She says, though it's changed locations, the purpose of the shop never has: to have something for every occasion. "We strive to meet the home décor and gift-giving needs of our customers. One can find gifts for most any occasion from birth and baptism, through birthdays and all the way to 50th anniversaries," Donna explains. "Whether someone is looking for jewelry or home décor or entertaining necessities, we have it."
Any holiday is a big deal along the Gulf Coast, and Jubilee Gift Shop knows it. From New Year's to Christmas and every holiday in between, Donna, who chooses the merchandise, tries to find something for everyone. But in typical Gulf Coast fashion, it's Mardi Gras that causes the most fuss. Donna explains: "Mardi Gras is huge for us; we even have one krewe that comes en masse to shop every year. We hope to have exactly the right gift for the krewe royalty, as well as for anyone who loves Mardi Gras."
Many local artisans sell their works at Jubilee, and Donna says they are always interested in including other artists. It's the community, she says, that makes enjoying her job so easy – and what she attributes to the shop's success.
"I love what I'm doing, and I love to meet new people and welcome them to my store," she says, noting that though online store traffic has picked up due to COVID, actually getting people to the store is probably the most difficult aspect of running her business. "There's not much foot traffic here as compared to being in a walkable downtown or in a large shopping center. Our customers almost 100 percent have to drive to us purposefully."
She says she views it as all the more reason to support her community and give people a reason to want to stop by. "The best part of owning this small business is getting being part of the Eastern Shore community and Mobile area. I strive to support that community through this shop."
