"Slow down. You will get there faster!"
My father once told me this, and I thought he was absolutely crazy. I remember thinking my cool dad had lost his mind! How in the world would I get anywhere faster if I slowed down? I remember his answer so vividly: "You will not understand if I explain it to you; you will learn the meaning in time, just be careful until you do." All I could do at that point was thank him (for what I had no clue would be beneficial at the time), but I knew one day this saying would punch me right in the mouth and I would know exactly what he was talking about.
Well, that one day came during the last time we experienced a market like we are seeing today.
Until I learned the meaning of this saying, I thought it was related to speed. That could not be further from the truth. It's about relaxing, remaining calm, remaining alert , remaining focused on the task, and appreciating the moment. The more out of control we are with our actions and our thought process, the more mistakes we make, and the more mistakes we make, the more time it takes with a lot of unnecessary issues. Slowing down will keep you from making those mistakes, and ultimately save you the time you'd be spending fixing them later.
As REALTORS®, the mistakes we make are not just ours, they become our clients, and everyone involved in our transactions. These mistakes are not little, and, in most cases, they can be at a huge monetary expense, the cost of losing a good client or both. It is not about us; it's about the client, so be sure to slow down. You will get there faster.
Today's Market is well... crazy, great, busy, successful, exciting, tiring, confusing, challenging, mood changing, brain cramping, gratifying, fabulous, schedule changing, stressful, scary, time consuming, alarming, weird, urgency acting, greed inducing and the perfect incubator for BAD HABITS!
The market that we are experiencing today is the perfect storm for creating bad habits! Bad habits are created by going too fast. When we go too fast, we lose focus on our mission. We become too "busy" keeping up with the process, keeping up with the market, keeping up with market altering sellers and multiple offer buyers and ultimately, extra unnecessary issues. Slow down. You will get there faster.
A large part of our mission as REALTORS® is to provide value! We provide value by attracting clients instead of trying to sell them! We attract by showing up, paying attention (listening to our clients), telling the truth, keeping our commitments, and not getting attached to the outcome.
