Over 30 teams full of strength and tenacity competed this past Saturday in the annual Dragon-Boat-Races-300x225Fuse Project's Inaugural Dragon Boat Festival, a community event put on by The Fuse Project. The teams rushed down the Mobile Delta at 5 Rivers on the Causeway in Spanish Fort, AL with only pride and prestige in mind for the win, since all proceeds went towards charity.
The Fuse Project is a nonprofit 501c3 organization that is dedicated to providing a spark for innovation, funding and implementation of projects that benefit children along Alabama's Gulf Coast. The organization strives to raise awareness and funding for projects that promote health, fitness, education and social responsibility of our children. The Fuse Project invests time, dedication and support to see not only completion of ideas created by existing philanthropies and organizations, but also grass-roots efforts by determined individuals in the community. The causes that will be supported through this specific Dragon Boat Race are a Mobile middle school after-school program and the creation of hands-on learning experiences in Mobile and Baldwin County schools provided through the Mobile Bay Estuary Corp Program.
The race consists of a number of teams, each made up of 20 paddlers and one drummer, with 40 foot Chinese row boats that must be rowed 250 meters. Along with a team registration fee, each team member must raise $60 each to benefit the cause. The event consists of not only the races, but also hot air balloon rides, inflatables, food trucks, music, and other types of exhibitions to create a festival atmosphere.
One of the competing teams was our very own Truland Homes. The Truland team finished in 7th place overall, out of more than 30 teams participating. They also received recognition and a trophy for fundraising the most donations, with a grand total of $6,035.
