Spring cleaning? Consider clearing out the clutter

The azaleas are blooming and traffic is increasing, which means it’s officially spring along Alabama’s Gulf Coast! While that likely means taking the time do some cleaning, consider taking the time to do improve your home’s flow as well.

Streamlining how you function in your home could mean moving to a new home or renovating your current one. But since it’s always best to start small and then up the ante, consider decluttering your home and improving its organization as part of your spring cleaning this year.

Here are decluttering/organization DOs to help get you started:

  • DO rearrange your décor accessories. It’ll give you a fresh look and a chance to see if you have more than you need. Less is more when it comes to decluttering
  • DO tackle one room to organize at a time. It’s likely going to take more than one day to do your whole home, so don’t burn out by taking on too much at once.
  • DO remove the donate/give away pile immediately after finishing a room. If that’s not possible, set a deadline for yourself to have everything divided up and distributed. Moving piles from one room to another isn’t going to help you declutter, so stick to a system.
  • DO clean as you declutter. You might not always dust the top shelf of your kitchen pantry, but since you’re up there tidying up, you might as well do double duty.
  • DO keep in mind how you use the space. Consider your lifestyle and preferences. For example, if you wear jeans more than shorts, keep the jeans on a handier shelf in your closet.
  • DO try to imagine the ways you’d use something you’re planning on keeping. If the likelihood of those imagined uses coming to fruition is low, it might be time to consider donating it. This is especially true if you’re prone to keeping multiples of the same thing or have tools or other bulky items that could be rented if they’re used infrequently.

Just as important as what to do, below are a few tips on what to avoid as you work to declutter your home:

  • DON’T buy any organizers or containers before you declutter. Wait until you know if you need any extra boxes. Remember, the goal is to get rid of boxes—not store empty ones. If you think you may need some type of organization system, you’ll get a better idea of what you need after you’ve removed everything you don’t.
  • DON’T be afraid to get inventive. There may be ways to use that random area in your home for storage.
  • DON’T be discouraged when your home doesn’t look like a magazine cover when you’re finished decluttering. It looks good and it’s functional, so be proud. A closet in a magazine can’t do that!
