Easy Children’s DIY Valentine’s Day Decor

Trying to come up with a way to keep the kids entertained? Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, so maybe your children can help your home feel the love with some custom-made Valentine’s Day decorations.

The instructions below for festive wall garland and yarn letters should help you burn a few hours and encourage your children to get creative. The mess level, though, that’s up to you!

DIY Wall Garland

For this project you will need the following:

  • Decorative string such as twine
  • 18 squares of colored cardstock or scrapbook paper in reds and pinks
  • Cut-out letters that spell out “Happy Valentine’s Day” or ways to draw or paint the letters. We said the mess level was up to you.
  • Mini clothes pins or something similar
  • Scissors
  • Glue

Step 1: Start by cutting 18 individual banner squares. The size is ultimately up to you based on how much area you’d like your children to have to decorate. Just remember you need enough string to fit all the squares. If you’re feeling ambitious, you can turn the squares into triangles or hearts for a little variety.

Step 2: Glue each letter to its own banner square or triangle if you opted for cut-outs. If not, use whatever you like – paint, pencils, markers, etc.—to draw the letters on each square.

Step 3: Make sure everything is dry before you try to string them together. Once they are, lay them out in the correct order with your desired spacing. Cut your string to match. You can make your garland one long piece of string or you can break up the words and do two or three tiered layers.

Step 4: Use the mini clothes pins to attach each banner square to the string. Once your garland is finished, it’s ready to hang on your mantel over your child’s bedroom door.

“Love” Yarn Letters

For this project you will need the following:

  • Large plain letters that spell “LOVE” (or an alternate preferred saying) that can stand on their own.
  • Three different shades of pink yarn are suggested, though you can branch out with your own color combination!
  • Clear tape or glue

Step 1: Tape your first yarn color to the back of your first letter. Wrap the yarn tightly around the letter with little space between the pieces of yarn. You should be able to cover at least part of the tape with this first yarn color. Keep wrapping until your letter is 1/3 complete.

Step 2: Once you’re ready to change your colors, cut the end of the first color of yarn and tie it to the beginning of your next color of yarn. Wrap this color until you are about 2/3 of the way complete.

Step 3: You’re getting the idea. Once you’re finished with that color, cut the end of your second color of yarn and tie it to the beginning of your third color of yarn. Wrap this color until the letter is completely covered.

Step 4: Finally, cut the third color of yarn off, and depending on how tight you wound it, tie it to other pieces of yarn on the back of the letter to keep it from unraveling. Alternatively, you can add a drop of glue or tape to the end of the yarn on the back or bottom of the letter.

Step 5: Repeat steps 1 -4 for each letter. You now have a home-made Valentine’s Day decoration for your mantel or dining table.

Happy Valentine’s Day!
